MYB POP Quiz

Q. How many volunteers does it take to run a MYB Meet?

See the Answer and Details below.

The success of the Montgomery YMCA Barracudas Swim Team depends on the active participation of EVERY swim team family.  It is MYB's policy to fully staff the meets we sponsor (host at our pool).

bullet

Each MYB Swim Family is required to help (volunteer) during at least three (3) sessions of a three (3) day meet and at least one (1)  session of a one-day meet.  Sessions are usually no longer than four (4) hours in length.

There are additional opportunities for volunteering before or after the meet.

While there are some parents who volunteer at meets by having been certified to serve as officials, there are also plenty of "We'll Train You" positions that need volunteers during a swim meet.    Of course, any and all new parents are welcome to become certified officials and fulfill their volunteer requirement that way.  If you would rather volunteer in a "We'll Train You" position, descriptions of those positions follow:

All parents interested in becoming US Swimming or YMCA Swimming officials check out the details and then send an email, or leave a message with MYB Board member.  If you are already working on your officials certification, thank you and please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you.

See the Officials Page for information about all USA swimming official positions

bullet

Concessions - working the concessions stand, may be for part or all of the meet depending on format of meet (number of sessions), may include set up or tear down of concession stand area.

bullet

Timers - Time for at least one session per day for the meet, this is a position we ideally need 16 people for this function, so we always need some family members to step up and be timers.

bullet

Runners - Runs entry cards from the timers to the computer table, may also assist Clerk of Course with making sure swimmers are in place or may assist the computer workers with posting results.

bullet

Computer Workers - work with the Entry Chairman and post and enter meet results, some computer knowledge is helpful, requires Primary and 2 backup staff

bullet

Recorder/Scorer - reviews times and validates data prior to submission to computer workers, requires Primary and 2 backup staff

bullet

Timing System Workers - work with Timing System equipment and setup and run meet for pad and timing system, some computer knowledge is helpful, requires Primary and 2 backup staff

So, please consider these facts and figures. Every competition takes a lot of volunteers - most are MYB parents whose swimmers are competing.  None are paid.  Not all are seen from the stands.  There are both deck officials and office officials, plus those working in the peripheral areas, providing hospitality, etc.  Everyone can find a job where they can help and still be comfortable with what they are doing.  It is easy to get involved; check with a MYB Board Member, signup on the rosters posted before each meet or send an email to MYB expressing your areas of interest.
